Sunday Drive

Conditions have calmed down quite a bit, although we're still enjoying a nice cool breeze. That's good because it's a bit humid. Things looked nice and calm in the marina.

The ocean looked good on N Frigate.

The seas looked good on S Friars, looking toward Shipwreck.

What's this? The Godfather has a new neighbor! The Mongoose Bar & Grill upped and moved from their spot further down Friars. I'm not sure what that other building is - kitchen? I've never seen this bar open, although I have to admit I don't go to S Friar's all that often. There are a few other small bars like this further west on this beach too, so I'll take a sunny weekend day, see if I can catch them open sometime, and find out what they have to say for themselves.

Things looked pretty good on all the rest of the beaches too, so other than some clouds and possible showers here and there, hopefully that's it. We're just going to enjoy the cool temps and veg. Have a great Halloween everyone!

Lena Bjärskoglok - Singing on the Beach

I was rather sick of my sticky-keyed, spacebar-less laptop (I've ordered a new keyboard) so never got around to telling you about the gig at The Godfather last week. First, we all just plain hung out and soaked up some rays. Here's me, Tina, and Lena as sweaty, hot (literally) babes.

Tina and Michael getting abused by the surf.

John enjoying a little karaoke.

Michael playing bartender.

Then it was time for Lena to transform into Saft Stockholm and sing her little heart out. Interesting audience and venue don't you think? That guy in the white shirt was totally enthralled by her (her voice or her good looks, I don't know, but does it really matter?)

At one point a guy from the local TV station came and taped/interviewed her. I'm sure she really appreciated that as she sang all sweaty and in her bathing suit...They did interview her again under different circumstances, but I can't find anything about it on the station's website.

We enjoyed tunes in Spanish (for Jose), Swedish (for Lena/John), and English (for the rest of us). She was great! Her English songs had great influences, like Middle Eastern, Spanish, and African, with great beats. One, in particular (very new), had her octaves going all over the place and yet her voice handled it like a champ. I can't wait until the songs are taped in a studio and released for us to boogie and/or chill (as appropriate) to.

Later we waited for the ever elusive green flash. There's Jose determined to capture the moment.

During the week, there was yet another brush fire (this one definitely caused by a cigarette butt - %$#*! - why we call smokers "buttheads").

Once again, the fire department didn't want to make the drive to the peninsula, so a project contractor came and saved the day by bringing in their water truck. Mike emptied the fire extinguishers again too.

The fire actually took a couple of days to knock out as it just kept reigniting. We really need some rain. I just heard from a pal in Grenada and they're dealing with water outages thanks to their worst drought in 29 years.

Since Lena is trying to get as much audience play and feedback as possible, she's playing wherever she can, so Friday night she debuted at Mr. X's Shiggidy Shack.

The video is dark and the sound a bit sketchy, but here's a taste of Saft Stockholm in action.

If you're really interested there are some videos here and Lena's got a link on her blog as well.

Today is not only hash day, but St. Patty's hash day. Perhaps we'll find that pot of gold!

Here's your moment of zen.

Mom's Last Day, Red Dress Hashing, and Golfing

We had quite a busy past couple of days. For my Mom's last day, we had one more lunch at the Shipwreck and were visited by what seems to be a restaurant regular.

Can you spot the mongoose in this picture eating fruit (they look like fat ferrets)?

We drove around a bit and before we knew it it was time to take my Mom back to the house so she could change from her summer clothes into her winter clothes. Boo. We're hoping she made it to Charlotte and Newark (by plane) and finally Virginia (by car) safely and is re-bonding with her pooch Tico and kitty Gossamer. Miss you already Mom!

Saturday was also the Valentines Day hash. We missed the hiking part (can't say that was too terrible) but checked in afterwards to see everyone in costume. The beginning and end were held at The Godfather on South Friar's beach.

There were lots of virgins to initiate and one guy to punish for hitching a ride during the hash...twice.

Food, of course.

One costume winner. Where does she get these costumes - what I would give to see her closet...

The Godfather has also become a hookah bar. No one get your panties in a twist (or call the narcotics police), there's just tobacco in there (and not the kind with lots of toxins). I don't think Jingle Balls liked it as much as Dame Karla...

Hashers then couldn't resist dancing at another local bar down the beach.

How low can they go? A little bit smaller now...

Then today, miracles of miracles, Michael actually went golfing. We lugged his golf clubs and shoes all around the Caribbean on Jacumba and not once was he able to get on a course (too much $ and boat repairs took precedence). Mike was able to hook up with someone here to get a great discount and took to the greens of the Royal St. Kitts Golf Course this morning. Before he could hit the links, his barely worn shoes fell apart. Yep, the soles just disintegrated. Even our shoes couldn't survive the conditions we subjected them to aboard that friggin' boat. He had to rent a pair. Whoever visits us next, we need a size 9 1/2 pair of golf shoes thank you.

How's Mike's form?

Oops, I don't think that's good.

The course was really pretty.

Ok, what the heck was this doing in the middle of the course? Looks like it's seen its share of "Fores!"

Not a bad way to spend the day. Now we go back to the grind. Not that that's a bad thing...

Oh yeah, Happy Valentines Day to you sappy fools that celebrate it.

Seen it all! Beach Bars & Plantations

Ok, I think we've seen just about everything, minus what you have to hike to on the island. We have one more round in Basseterre to visit the downtown area, but then I think the Mom has seen all there is to see on St. Kitts for now. We had another pool day on Monday and then yesterday first went to Shipwreck for lunch.

We were joined by an uninvited guest. Right before he got too comfortable a motorcycle pulled up and scared him off.

Then it was back in the car for another adventure on the left-side of the curvy, narrow roads. No close calls this time (well, no closer than what's normal here). First we stopped at Ottley's Plantation.

When we tried to leave, this cow's chain was blocking our way. We all (cow and car) inched up until the chain laid flat and we were able to stomp on the gas pedal and shoot past without choking the poor thing.

Then we found Rawlin's Plantation, I had actually never been there. Kate Spencer has an art gallery up there and we wanted to see what more she had in her repertoire (from what we had seen at a gallery located within the Marriott). She certainly had an awesome view (she lives there too).

A quaint little yellow church on the plantation grounds.

Then it was time to drive back, have our usual passion fruit/colada rum slushy on the patio, and settle in for popcorn for dinner. That's right - my Mom LIKES popcorn for dinner, so we were all one big happy, popcorn crunching family.
